Departures

Daily on demand from the Black Water Cafe which is about five minutes by car before the Waitomo Caves village. Several coach companies operate regular return trips from Auckland and/or Rotorua to Waitomo. These include Newmans, Scenic Tours, Kiwi Experience and Magic Bus. Clients should contact the operator for excursion starting times.

Black Water 'Rafting' I

Black Water 'Rafting' I approximately 3 hours, including one hour underground. Black Water 'Rafting' II approximately 5 hours including 2 to 3 hours underground, depending on the group.

Highlights:

Both excursions are designed to be fun and exciting. Black Water 'Rafting' I is 'soft adventure' which combines walking and floating on large inner tubes through a unique underground river system peppered with glowworms. Black Water 'Rafting' II adds abseiling, climbing, floating through steams by the light of glowworms, and other surprises.

Inclusions:

Caving outfit including boots and safety helmet with light. Large rubber tube to float in. Where applicable, abseiling instruction and all equipment. All excursions are accompanied by highly trained guides, generally two for every three clients. All participants receive free admission to Waitomo's Museum of Caves. Black Water 'Rafting' II includes soup and bagels at the Black Water Cafe after your adventure. Hot showers are provided.

Description:

Black Water 'Rafting' I is a fun soft adventure for anyone who is reasonably fit and at least 12. It takes you walking and floating through a gentle section of the 50 kilometres of caves under Waitomo. Marvel at natures architecture and the myriad glowworms which call these caves home.

Black Water 'Rafting' II

Black Water 'Rafting' II involves abseiling and climbing as well as floating without lights in glowworm caves. It too is fine for anyone who is reasonably fit and agile and at least 16. Highly trained guides and the best of equipment make it safe and enjoyable.

Special conditions:

Black Water 'Rafting' I participants must be at least 12 years old, weigh no less than 40 kilograms and be 1.2 metres tall. Black Water 'Rafting' II must be at least 16 years old. Participants must advise their guides if they have any fears or phobias. All clients must observe measures designed to protect the fragile cave environment.
