Kingsgate Hotel Greymouth is a welcoming hotel in the centre of Greymouth virtually on the Grey River. It is just a kilometre from the terminus for the world famous Tranz-Alpine train, which connects it to Christchurch. Greymouth is about the centre of a 500 kilometre narrow strip of land wedged between the Southern Alps and the pounding Tasman Sea on the west coast of the South Island. The area boomed with the discovery of gold in 1864 and retains some of the Irish and Irish/Australian influence brought with them by miners.
