Built
in 1882 The Martinborough Hotel was claimed by its owner to be one of
the finest hotels ever built in an inland town in New Zealand. Restored
to its former glory in 1996, this 5 star property can claim that accolade
again. Set in what is now one of the world's emerging fine wine areas
an hour's drive east of Wellington, the colonial two-storey hotel is
a superb example of a hotel of the period.
It
has 16 double or twin rooms, 9 of them opening onto the private upstairs
verandah through French doors, the other 7 onto an internal flower-filled
courtyard. Each is luxuriously decorated in a completely different style.
Themes range from traditional British to old-world Asia and the Middle
East. All rooms have black and white tiled bathrooms, some with deep
claw-foot baths and showers, other just showers. Guests have a choice
of king, double or twin rooms.
The
Martinborough Bistrot changes menus regularly to produce meals to complement
local wine styles. This a la carte restaurant has a huge wine list with
French, Australian and US wines resting beside award winning local vintages.
Outside tables spill into the town square in warmer months. The lively
and more casual Settlers Bar has an interesting collection of local
memorabilia, a view over the town square and traditional pub food. It's
a popular meeting place with locals, and boasts a roaring log fire in
winter.
