southern
cross hotel
On Monday 12 June 2023 the Scenic Circle Southern Cross Hotel’s refurbishment programme commences. All main and tower wing rooms will be upgraded over a 7 month period. The sixth floor main wing rooms being the first affected.
This refurbishment program is scheduled to run through to late January 2007, at which time we expect to have refurbished all 104 rooms in the Main and Tower Wings of the hotel. Our lobby and Carlton Restaurant will also receive a face-lift.
The 104 guest rooms will be totally transformed with a timeless décor matching the opulence of the Grand Hotel (now Dunedin Casino) from yesteryear.
Rooms will be fitted with the latest LCD 32” TV screens offering the widest viewing angles, broadband connection, DVD and CD facilities, all conveniently situated in one panel at the desk.
New beds will receive special attention to obtain maximum comfort. A padded under blanket will fit over the mattress, covered by a sheet and a down and wool duvet, itself enveloped in a special cover that will serve as the upper sheet.
A night-light has been added in the entrance corridor for convenience when moving around at night without having to switch on all lights.
Southern
Cross Hotel is a modern 4star hotel in the centre of the city with a proud
heritage going back to 1883 when the original Grand Hotel on the site
was regarded as one of the country's finest. The hotel has been completely
rebuilt and extended, but much of the original ornate architecture has
been incorporated in its banqueting and conference rooms. The Southern
Cross opened its own boutique casino in 1999 with 12 gaming tables and
170 gaming machines.
The
hotel has 3 accommodation wings - the Main Wing with 71 rooms and 2 suites,
the Tower Wing with 30 rooms and 6 suites, and the Exchange Wing with
32 rooms. The Tower and Main Wings are equipped for business travellers
with in-room facsimile and modem lines. There is a full-scale business
centre with secretarial services. The hotel has 5 meeting rooms seating
up to 100 and an extensive range of equipment.
Southern
Cross has 2 bars; 2 restaurants open daily, and the signature a la carte
Carlton Restaurant which opens Friday and Saturday nights for dinner.
The Robert Harris Cafe serves casual meals 24 hours a day and Ports O'Call
offers brasserie style meals. Ports O'Call has a public bar popular with
locals and there is a more relaxed Lounge Bar. Room service operates 24
hours.
The hotel
has a well-equipped gymnasium with a solarium, tourist information and
excursion bookings service, laundry and dry cleaning service, and plenty
of open air and undercover parking.
