Huka
Lodge is simple superlative. It has won international recognition with
Top 10 placings in worldwide surveys by Andrew Harper's Hideaway Report,
Conde Nast Traveler, the Tattler Cunard Travel Guide and Forbes Business
Magazine to name just a few. It began humbly as a trout fishing camp
with canvas-walled huts. Built by young Irishman Alan Pye in the 1920s
above the mighty Huka Falls on the Waikato River, it has become the
epitome of a world-class hideaway. It was developed in its present luxurious
form from 1984 by present owner Alex van Heeren.
The area is a trout
angling paradise and Huka Lodge offers a complete range of guided fishing
excursions from wilderness fly-fishing by helicopter and four-wheel
drive to boat fishing. Hunting, horse riding, golf and a huge choice
of water-borne activities are also available.
Set
in 7 hectares of parkland 300 metres above Huka Falls, the lodge has
just 20 guest suites facing the river and the separate and very private
Huka Cottage. Built in 1937 within the grounds but almost hidden from
Huka Lodge, the cottage has three double bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms,
a dining room, a lounge room and a small kitchen. It has superb views
down river towards the falls. Cottage guests enjoy the full range of
Huka Lodge facilities. The 20 guest suites are set under towering trees
just 20 metres from the river, well away from each other and the main
lodge to ensure peace and privacy. Bathrooms have glass ceilings looking
up to the sky and the trees, under floor heating, a sunken bath, separate
shower and twin hand basins.
Huka
Lodge has an elegant central dining room, but guests may choose to dine
where they like within reason. A couple can choose a table in the garden
or in front of the outdoor fireplace on the terrace. The Wine Cellar
and the Trophy Room is also available. The Wine Cellar opposite the
front entrance has a central dining area for up to 12 guests and 6 cellar
chambers with 30,000 bottles of fine wine from New Zealand, France,
South Africa and the United States. Executive chef Nicholas Huffman
is the former owner of the multi-award winning Wheelers restaurant in
Auckland. Eveningwear is elegant casual.
Huka Lodge has a
totally private conference area with a meeting room for up to 20 and
a private lounge, both decorated with African hunting trophies. A comprehensive
range of audiovisual equipment is available, along with secretarial
services if required.
