Wise Recommendations On Where To Play Golf In Lagos, Portugal

Found in the Algarve region of Portugal, Lagos in an ancient town. In fact, it is from here that Vasco da Gama sailed on his epic journey to discover the Americas in 1499.

Now, Lagos is a bustling tourist town, one of the jewels of the region. Other than its incredible restaurants, stunning beaches, and numerous other tourist attractions, Lagos is one of the most popular golfing areas in the Algarve. It is located close to three excellent golf courses – Palmares, Boavista, and Espiche.

Espiche Golf Course

Espiche, opened in 2012, is not only a spectacular course but built with the environment in mind. Constructed on a natural parkland, Espiche is 5862 metres long and features undulating holes, streams, lakes and indigenous flora. The majestic Monchique Mountains serve as a backdrop in the distance. Perhaps one of the cleverest design features is the grass used on the course. This remains a bright green in summer, even when temperatures rise, turning browner green in winter as temperatures fall. This helps to ensure an extremely playable golf course all year round. Other facilities at the course include a clubhouse, bar, restaurant and practice green.

Boavista Golf Course

With the stunning panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean as the backdrop of the signature 7th hole, Boavista is a firm favorite with golfers visiting Lagos. If it is views you are after as you play through 18 holes, Boavista won’t disappoint. From the hills of Monchique, the Algarve coastline, and beautiful natural ravines, you will find them all out on the course. Other than the 7th hole, pay particular attention to the beauty of the 6th, and the stretch from 14 through to 17, particularly the water features. Other facilities include a clubhouse, bar, and restaurant.

Palmares Golf Course

Originally one of the first courses in the Algarve, Palmares has been redesigned into a 27 hole course with three distinct 9 hole sections – Alvor, Lagos, and Praia. Expect to find a variety of conditions with a combination of holes, many setup in a links fashion. Not only will the course challenge you, but the panoramic view will simply take your breath away.

  • Alvor
  • With pine tree lined fairways and undulating holes situated in valleys, the Alvor course is a unique challenge loved by all golfers.

  • Lagos
  • The Lagos course makes use of the only two lakes in the area which protect the 3rd and 6th hole. Other challenges include the sand dune of the coastline nearby, just waiting to catch your errant drive.

  • Praia
  • Set along the coastline, Praia offers links play at its most challenging, especially along the four holes right on the seaside.

If you spend any time golfing in Lagos, be sure to play all three courses for a truly unique experience.
